ABOUT ME

Aloha! I'm Dr. Danielle Zandbergen!

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Oregon State University and a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Counseling from the University of Hawaii. I am licensed in multiple states (HI-LMHC and OR-LPC) and also completed a Graduate Certificate in College and University Teaching (GCCUT). I have experience teaching college-level courses in psychology, infant and child development, human sexuality, family studies, and family violence and neglect.

I believe that the root of many individual’s relational concerns stem from early attachment bonds, which often translates into our adult relationships. In my clinical and coaching work, I tend to utilize a developmental approach to best meet my client’s needs and have been professionally trained in using a variety of modalities, but heavily lean on attachment theory as my roadmap. I specialize in working with adults who are faced with a variety of challenges in their social and romantic relationships, from starting and ending relationships (and everything that occurs in between). My workbooks, courses, and coaching services utilizes the powerful understanding of attachment theory, and ways we can build more sustainable, lasting, and supportive relationships in our lives.

MY WORK IS GROUNDED IN YEARS OF RESEARCH ENGAGEMENT

Aligned with all the material found here at The Recovering Insecure, I am also actively engaged in research and authored several publications examining the impact relationships have on our lives. My recent research explored the ways relational resources contribute to positive mental health outcomes among foster youth, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted mental health service accessibility. Past research studies explored gender and cultural differences in romantic jealousy, men’s perception of health-related concerns and how their female romantic partners choose their mates based on men’s acknowledgement of these concerns, the impact of utilizing sand play in children during the wake of Kilauea’s 2018 volcanic eruption, as well as preschool children’s self-regulation and activity in the stress response system between consistent and high-quality teacher-child interactions.

I run a successful private practice serving clients located both in Hawaii and Oregon primarily those seeking support in depression, anxiety, relationship or identity concerns, as well as trauma. The resources provided at The Recovering Insecure are supplemental in nature and due to the sensitivity of certain issues, I always make sure to create a separation between these services and will be 100% honest when I believe it is of people's best interest to seek counseling services if I believe attachment coaching is not the right fit for them.

MY APPROACH IS ROOTED IN HONESTY, RESPECT, AND SUPPORT

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COUNSELING & COACHING?

Although they might seem quite similar, there are major difference between therapy and coaching.

Therapy focuses on identifying barriers and challenges, increasing emotional wellness, and shifting beliefs regarding your overall mental health. Therapy focuses on symptom management and self-awareness. This is an ongoing process, and the aim is to support you as you identify ways to shift your day to day.

Coaching is a specific, targeted focus on one area of focus in your life. This work will help you identify a clear picture of any barriers, and together we will brainstorm solutions. Then, we put that solution to work. Coaching is the approach to use to help focus on future planning, including career, relationship, and/or family. This type of work focuses more on the use of your life experiences to create a direct path to one specific goal. Often, this can be used to change career paths, make a life change, or create a concrete goal with specific time-measured steps. Each coaching session will be targeting specific patterns of behavior you may have developed over the years as I help you learn specific insights and new skills to foster a more secure attachment style. All sessions do have a developed structure to them, but will remain individualized to focus on your specific attachment-related needs.
